Exhibit D #MMMAY16 Is it just me?

This year I joined Me May May, pledging to wear one garment I had made each week that I never or rarely wore, and to reflect on why I didn’t wear it. I missed posting last week, because I was so busy with getting The Dartmoor Yarn Company out into the world, but I did wear my final me made that, prior to this May, I’ve only worn once since I finished it about a year ago.

Bekki Hill Lacy Jumper

I’ve worn this sweater four times this May and I really like it. The problem is that  it’s a lacy sweater. When you wear a lacy sweater, you have to be careful that what you wear underneath doesn’t shine through and look bad. A pale cami is the obvious solution. However, because it’s a knitted sweater, I often get too hot and want to take it off . But I can’t, because I don’t want to walk around with my underwear exposed. I do have a white t-shirt and a white vest top, but they’re so boring, I don’t want to potentially expose them either. And, of course, when it’s cold enough to guarantee I’ll need to keep my sweater on, a lacy sweater’s no good, because all those holes make it too cold.

So, every time I look at this sweater in my wardrobe, I decide to wear something else, because whatever the weather, it’s not the right weather for a lacy sweater.

Is it just me that struggles with this one? And if it is only me, why don’t you get yourself in a mind jam over lace sweaters?

  1. I’m just struggling with putting sleeves into a jumper I’ve just finished knitting as we speak. It has a lacy pattern in a wide panel on the front and I have been asking myself the exact same questions. I am pretty sure it is going to be one of those things I never wear so, when I set one of the sleeves in wrong and had to undo it, I nearly chucked it in the bin but it seems a shame so I will persevere. I’ll let you know if I decide to wear it with my vest pinned to my knickers underneath or to reveal my M&S specials – or, more likely, not to wear it at all 😦
You look lovely in that photo, by the way, the blue really suits you.

    1. Aw! Thank you. I was hoping the rest of you were in on some secret solution to my dilemma, but it would appear not 😦 Vest pinned to knickers ha! ha! 🙂
Keep persevering – now I’ve made a concerted effort to wear it, I am loving it, although getting a bit too hot and a bit too chilly at times. I’m sure yours will be gorgeous. Look forward to seeing it.

  2. Line it just the front piece with some lovely lightweight fabric with a bit of stretch, the back and arms don’t matter. If you aren’t sure about that cut up the front of a T’shirt and hand stitch it in!. It is a shame to not enjoy something so beautiful.

      1. Hand sewing is easier might sound strange but I am loving the control it gives instead of wrestling with a machine! I think it would be worth it because it is a beautiful jumper! the colour suits you!

      2. Thank you. I think I’d need all the control I could get if I hand sew something to a knitted sweater 🙂 It would also mean fewer excuses not to do it as I wouldn’t have to unearth my sewing machine from beneath all the clutter 😉

  3. it looks fabulous on you! There must be a way to make it work. I like Fred the needle’s idea of lightly lining the front of it. I also would be less critical of what would happen if you wore a nice short sleeved or sleeveless shirt beneath it. I don’t; have a lace pullover, though I think about it often – but I do have a lace cardigan, and am planning an new one. I like them because they are nice and light and pretty. So I suppose you could make this one into a cardigan with a nice steek in front 🙂 But I wouldn’t – I would just settle on a shirt you like under it. And wear it weekly, it is gorgeous.

    1. Thank you. I have bought a white t-shirt now, but it’s so boring – I’m clearly overthinking this. Even your mention of lace cardigan frightened me. On a logical level, you’re right about it, but somehow just the thought fills me with horror. I’ll go away and think about that one.

      1. Now I think you ARE over thinking this! A nice plain white t shirt looks great with EVERYTHING, especially if there is a lace sweater somewhere about. Lace cardigan’s shouldn’t frighten you, they are easy to toss on over anything. plain or patterned. 🙂

      2. lol – I made this cardi in a light worsted weight/dk yarn, and I use it all the time. It’s not very delicate, really.
        here’s my project – http://www.ravelry.com/projects/salpal1/filigree-lace-jacket

As fro white t shirt being boring when you take off the cardigan, well, I guess you just need a really pretty pin or necklace to go with it, too. I know, this is getting complicated. 🙂

      3. Lovely cardi – thanks for sharing the links. I see you’re wearing it as a winter lace cardi – very clever.

Don’t know about getting complicated, but it is getting expensive, because clearly the conclusion here is that I need more pins and necklaces 🙂

      4. I actually wear that one year round – it stays on more in the winter, of course. I took those photos on a bitter cold day because it was sunny, lol.

Yes, everything good costs more, don’t you know? 🙂

  4. I have several sleeveless sweaters, and it’s always the same. If it’s cold enough to wear a sweater, I miss the sleeves. If it’s warm enough to go sleeveless, I want something lighter. So I never wear them, but they are pretty and I can’t seem to part with them. Anyhow, sounds like some good solutions have been suggested here. Hopefully you can make that beautiful sweater work for you – it does look great.

  5. But it’s gorgeous and so are you in it. Yes some jumpers need something underneath that don’t look right on there own it’s you get hot. I am known to get changed several times a day because of this!

  6. What a lovely sweater! I hope you can come to an agreeable solution for it. Maybe an undershirt that is a “nicer” material than a t-shirt? Then you could take off the top off and still have on a nice top. (I often thought, during my hot-flash stage, that a nice beanie with water misters would be good for those warmer moments. 😉 )
