I always save the left over embroidery threads from cross stitch kits, but until now have never found use for them. But I finally used some…
Recently a friend’s daughter and her boyfriend bought their first house. When I looked for a card to send her none felt good enough, so I decided to make my own with a bit of left over aida and some of the aforesaid left over embroidery thread.
‘Cheapskate’ I hear you say? Well, I guess it didn’t cost a bean, but it took a lot more time, effort and love than buying a card. Plus once I’d finished it, I decided to pop it in a small frame, that I did pay for, as I felt there’d just been too much effort put into it to glue it to a card that would only be enjoyed for a week or two.
If you fancy stitching your own house cross stitch for a card or to be framed, here’s the chart I made up for mine…
I’m joining in this month with Kate & Gun’s monthly Scrap Happy Day where you too can use your scraps of fabric, yarn, paper, wood, anything to make something useful or lovely or both and show it off to the world. You don’t have to join in every month, only when you have something to show. Here’s a list of the other Scrap Happy participants should you want to visit their blogs:
Kate , Gun, Titti, Heléne, Eva, Sue, Nanette, Lynn, Lynda,
Birthe, Turid, Susan, Cathy, Debbierose, Tracy, Jill, Claire, Jan, Karen,
Moira, Sandra, Linda, Chris, Nancy, Alys, Kerry, Claire, Jean, Johanna,
Joanne, Jon, Hayley, Dawn, Gwen, Connie, and Pauline

That’s so pretty – and original too. I’m sure that will find a special place in the new home. I like that you and me are both making our ScrapHappy debuts at the same time ❤

YAY! We’re in sync 🙂 Love that too.
My friend says her daughter loves it. I’ve know her since she was three and she’s such a lovely girl. Or rather a young woman now.

Great idea! Why don’t we make something like this more often, instead of buying something bland and anonymous in the greetings card line? It shows a lot more thought and effort (as well as using scraps creatively). Great ScrapHappy launch 🙂

Thank you. And I agree – especially since a decent card here usually costs £3 or more. I’ve decided to make all my own cards this year – although they won’t all be cross stitch. Will reserve that more the more special keepsake type of ‘card’.

That’s a good idea. Now, if you use lots of scraps for them, make sure you take a photo for ScrapHappy Day 😉

Yes, Miss 😉 Just read the Snail of Happiness’s Scrap Happy post and am loving the idea of leaves from old net curtain for cards too.

Jan can find useful scrap where most of us see total rubbish, so she’s a bit of a ScrapHappy star. But even she forgets to take photos of what she’s made sometimes, and how can we share otherwise? 🙂

I think we all so often remember to take pics only after we’ve finished 😦

I do like a house motif. Can you tell 😉
Cross stitch patterns as well as knitting patterns – neither is a talent I possess. I don’t do cross stitch at all so I have to rely on my daughter for any goodies like that. She was making me one for Christmas but I still haven’t got it. The one I’ve seen her working on has a rude word on it so I hope that’s not mine.
You are right to frame that little house – it will hang in their new home now instead of being tucked in a drawer somewhere or – heaven forfend – be thrown away.

Cross stitch patterns are infinitely easier than most knitting patterns.
Rude word cross stitch? What a naughty daughter. Hope you get yours eventually – without rude words.

Welcome to ScrapHappy! That’s a lovely alternative to a bought card and I’m sure the recipients will treasure it.
