Welcome to my Sunday Sevens – a post where I share seven (or so) photos of my week away from the blog.
It’s been a quiet week with all out Christmas visitors gone and the UK not really having gone fully back to work post Christmas. There was New Years Eve, but after a busy Christmas, half full of cold and with the log burner beckoning, we didn’t fancy the cold dark walk to the pub and back to celebrate. The snails in our village however had different plans; we spotted them having a party on this rock on New Years Eve afternoon…
It’s been reasonably mild lately and signs of spring are starting to peak through…
No idea what the primroses are up to though. Some of them seem to be perpetually flowering in my garden…
Thursday was book group. I should have read The Secret Life of Bees – and I did want to – but Christmas had been far to busy for me to get round to it..
Today we had a walk through the woods to the old Arsenic mine at the Tamar Trails centre.
Chilling to think people used to work here with only a handkerchief over their faces for protection.
And that, I’m afraid, was the extent of the excitement in my world last week.
Until next time.

I really loved The Secret Life of Bees – it has that touch of ‘otherworldliness’ that makes life so mysterious. I would have liked to be able to enlarge that photo of the plaque at the mine site. I am so uneducated about some chemicals I didn’t even know arsenic was mined! This is one of those examples that proves how stupid people are isn’t it. Once mining arsenic was thought to be perfectly safe and anyone who said otherwise was labelled a fool . Fast forward a hundred years or so and substitute any number of contemporary issues that there are endless debates about and which continue to be done in the pursuit of making money……….

Hopefully one day I will get round to reading the Secret life of Bees – I’ve not met anyone who didn’t like it. And now I’ve you to add to the list. Unfortunately, yes, there’s a lot ‘ignored’ when money is to be made. Unfortunately although health and safety concerns are taken much more seriously in many countries, they still aren’t in other and also there’s modern poisons that are being all but totally ignored such as what wifi and phone signals are doing to us 😦

I have just read The Secret Life Of Bees. My first read of 2020! I was gifted it in a Thrifty Christmas Gift Swap I joined in with. It is definitely worth reading. There’s also a film, which I would like to see.
Like your above commenter I didn’t realise arsenic was mined. Scary indeed! X

I will read it one day. Meanwhile I’ll have to avoid the film. Book first for me is always better.

Bless those snails huddling together for warmth.
I loved ‘The Secret Life Of Bees’ and, maybe even more, one of her other novels ‘The Invention of Wings’.
Unlike Pauline I could zoom in on the information plaque at the old mine. Amazing to think there was a boom and a slump all in a ten year period which I suppose would have represented many jobs lost which was lucky really for the health of the workers although they wouldn’t have appreciated that then.
I have also had an ‘unexciting’ post Christmas – apart from this morning when Mr. Tialys and Mlle. Tialys the Younger were about to leave for the airport to go back to the U.K. and she couldn’t find her passport. Cue frantic searching for 30 minutes until she remembered where she ‘might’ have put it. I’m spending the morning hoping he isn’t driving like a maniac trying to make up for lost time and also hoping they don’t miss the flight or they’ll be no living with him!!

Yet another vote for Secret Life of bees – I will read it I promise.
Glad you could zoom in, not quite sure why Pauline couldn’t.
Hope hubby and Mlle T caught their plane and arrived safely in the UK. Doesn’t matter how old they get they can still forget the most important thing. Not so long ago lovely littlest left he laptop here after a visit.

Lies down in shock………………….
Better now, just about
The arsenic mine- you visited how great. It was on TV recently. Was it an abandoned engineering, maybe, anyway it looked fascinating, and your pictures are great.
Happy New Year !

It was Christmas and family comes first. I’m sure you’ll agree with that. Not sure if it was abandoned. there are lots of old tin and copper mines in west devon and cornwall, so just took it in as part of the mining landscape. Happy New Year!
