Most of my soap dishes are two part affairs which allow the water to drain off the soap into a space below, rather than the soap ending up sitting in a pool of water as it does in a simple dish. The soap in the utility however used to sit in a dish – probably because it doesn’t get used very often. However, I’ve been doing a lot more gardening and washing my hands in the utility sink afterwards. I therefore decided I needed another self draining soap dish, but where would I find one in lock down?
I looked around for items to make one from and happened upon two scraps of recycling; one of the trays that Harry’s wet food comes in…
and a tray that blueberries had come in with small holes in the bottom. This tray fitted perfectly inside the other…
Not only does it drain beautifully, I can also tidy the nail brush and the lose plug into it…
I just wish I had more ideas for all the other bits of plastic packaging things are sold in.
And now I’ve written all that, I’m wondering if this is using scraps or just plain recycling. But I’ve written it now, so am posting.

Now that’s an interesting concept – using my fabric scraps regularly. Just today I had a very mini sort out and was loathe to throw out anything just ‘in case’ I can use it one day. I shall keep an eye on some of those blogs. Well done with your plastic recycling – good idea as space for the ancillaries too!

I’m terrible, I hate to part with anything. At scrap happy makes me focus on actually using the leftover I hoard.

I was just browsing the internet and came across a scrap project I may well make (might reveal here if it works out ok!). There is definitely something good about making something from a little bit of nothing – in this case. I had spent an hour or so today sorting fabric, which actually meant just putting it back where it was albeit in a different order!

And does it look prettier in a different order? 😉
It certainly does feel good to make things for nothing and to feel one is saving a little waste from heading out into the environment. Fingers crossed for your project – hope to see it next month. (I’m intrigued)

Not sure it looks any prettier – there is just slightly less of a pile of ‘stuff’ in another part of the house as things became amalgamated! Yes, I do like the idea of less landfill etc. I usually do ‘swaps’ with crafty friends – we meet once a week in a cafe and craft/chat/eat cake together – at the moment we are all stockpiling and rediscovering what we have and what we might do with it all. Ooh just reminded myself – must drop off some stash yarn to a friend making hats for charity … tally ho!

That all sounds lovely. Tally ho! 🙂 x

well done, I’ll look for my plastic packaging and see if I can make something similar.

Thank you. Of course you do need to have the right size trays and the bottom one is perfect because it has those ridges, so the top one sits above rather than in any water that drains off. Good luck with finding something that works.

I’m the moderator, and I can decide for you! It IS using scraps, or at a minimum, repurposing, and i think it’s a brilliant idea. The only other thing I’d have done is take my Sharpies to it for a spot of waterproof decoration!

Thank you. I’m currently hooked on watercolour – so decorating with them would be a disaster 🙂 Sharpies a much better plan.

It was scrap plastic and now it’s a soap dish, and a jolly good idea too.

If you hadn’t made something from it, you’d probably have put it in the bin or recycling so that’s scrap in my book but, more importantly, in Kate’s too.
Now, I’m going to exploit the opportunity to use one of my favourite words. How serendipitous that the blueberry tray fits into the dog food tray so perfectly. 😏
