Last time I posted I said I wanted to paint a more red squirrel than the ones I’d just painted…

I started by choosing a reference photo with a squirrel that looked a lot more red…

I painted the tail and was really pleased with it – it’s great fun painting squirrel’s tails. (I may have mentioned that before.) Then I painted the body.

It’s more more red, but I got way carried away; far too much paint. Reminder to self: Once in a while take a step back and look at what you’ve done. On the plus side, I do like the loose leaves underneath – although on reflection I think it would have been better if the bottom of his legs had merged with them – like the horse’s mouth I recently painted merging into the grass.
Ah well, all good learning.
Until next time,

Beautiful! We have reds in our part of Northumberland. So much prettier than those pesky grey interlopers.

Thank you. How lovely for you. Such a shame the greys have pushed out our native reds.

Bless! The colours are better aren’t they.
I’ve only ever seen red squirrels here and their colours vary – sometimes they seem almost black.

I think so 😊
Black! 😱 Are you sure they’re not vampire bats? 😉

You can always paint a leaf over them just might have to balance the rest of the leaves out with some deeper saturation to blend the foot covers
It looks lovely and I really love your blue squirrel

Hello. Thank you. I think you’re right – always something you can do to improve what you don’t like. But think I’m for starting a new painting and taking what I’ve learned on to my future pictures, since anything I’m painting now is all learning and never going to find itself onto anyone’s wall.
